Choosing the right computer is essential for blind musicians, especially those who use screen readers such as NVDA. Here are some important criteria to consider to ensure an optimal experience in Computer-Assisted Music Production (CAM or DAW).

Keyboard Configuration

For a laptop, it is crucial to be able to disable the functions assigned to the F1–F12 keys so they can be used in a standard way, as on a desktop computer. These keys are often used in music production software and by screen readers.

In addition, the keyboard should include an Application key, also known as the Menu key. This key is frequently used to open context menus and is particularly important in Reaper with OSARA. Finally, an integrated numeric keypad is essential for efficient use of music production software.

Performance and Memory

For music production, a minimum of 32 GB of RAM is recommended. This amount of memory ensures smooth performance when recording, editing, and mixing multiple audio and MIDI tracks.

Storage: SSD vs. M.2 SSD

An SSD (Solid State Drive) is essential for music production because it offers fast loading times and better overall performance. However, an M.2 SSD is even better. Here’s why:

  • Higher Speed: M.2 SSDs provide much faster read and write speeds than standard SSDs, resulting in even quicker loading times and improved system responsiveness.
  • Compact Design: M.2 SSDs are smaller and lighter, which is especially advantageous for laptops.

It is also crucial to avoid traditional hard drives (HDDs), as they are much slower and less reliable than SSDs.

Other Important Criteria

  • Powerful Processor: A high-performance multicore processor (such as an Intel Core i7 or i9, or AMD Ryzen 7 or 9) is essential for handling intensive music production tasks.
  • Good Connectivity: Make sure the computer has enough USB ports to connect audio interfaces, MIDI controllers, and other essential equipment.
  • Efficient Cooling System: Music production can be demanding on hardware, so a good cooling system is necessary to prevent overheating.

Conclusion

In summary, the best computer for a blind musician should have a well-configured keyboard, at least 32 GB of RAM, an M.2 SSD for storage, and a powerful processor. By choosing a computer with these specifications, blind musicians can work more efficiently and productively on their music production projects.
