MIDI keyboards, or controllers, are essential tools for musicians working with music production software. For blind musicians, it is crucial that these keyboards are accessible and easy to use with screen readers. Here’s an overview of accessible MIDI keyboards and available resources for blind musicians.

Accessible MIDI Keyboards

Several MIDI keyboard models offer accessibility features that make them easier for blind musicians to use:

  • Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol: The Komplete Kontrol series keyboards include built-in accessibility features. They provide voice feedback through the Komplete Kontrol software, allowing users to navigate sounds and parameters.
  • Arturia KeyLab: Arturia’s KeyLab keyboards are compatible with several music production programs and can be configured for accessible use. Their integration with the Analog Lab software allows easy navigation of presets.

Accessibility of Arturia Instrument Libraries with Komplete Kontrol

Blind musicians can now easily access Arturia’s instrument libraries thanks to Native Instruments’ Komplete Kontrol keyboards and NKS files.

What Is an NKS File?

An NKS (Native Kontrol Standard) file is a format developed by Native Instruments to standardize the integration of virtual instruments with their Komplete Kontrol keyboards. This format allows users to browse and load sounds directly from the keyboard, with predefined parameters for simplified use.

Benefits for Blind Musicians

NKS files offer several advantages for blind musicians:

  • Easy Navigation: NKS files allow intuitive navigation through sounds and presets, making it easier to explore instrument libraries.
  • Screen Reader Compatibility: Komplete Kontrol keyboards provide voice feedback through the Komplete Kontrol software, allowing users to hear audio previews of presets before loading and to have parameters spoken aloud.
  • Access to a Wide Range of Instruments: Blind musicians can access a vast collection of Arturia instruments, expanding their sound palette and creative possibilities.

Through NKS file integration, Native Instruments’ Komplete Kontrol keyboards make Arturia’s virtual instruments more accessible, offering blind musicians a smooth and enriching user experience.
